Rhodiola Herb Boosts Lifespan in Fruit Flies

New research (as reported in the Ray Kurzweil newsletter) has demonstrated that extract of the herb rhodiola rosea extended the lifespan of fruit fly by on average 24%. Rhodiola has been used in traditional herbal medicine for centuries. The mechanism of action in extending lifespan is not clear but it seems it differs from other natural substances such as resveratrol. Rhodiola also delayed the degradation of physical performance of the flies.
Rhodiola has already shown possible health benefits in humans, such as decreasing fatigue, anxiety and depression; boosting mood, memory and stamina; and reducing stress. It's thought to affect the adrenal glands and levels of stress hormones such as cortisol. It’s also thought to have antioxidant properties.
For instance, here is a study of rhodiola for depression - it concluded "overall depression, together with insomnia, emotional instability and somatization, but not self-esteem, improved significantly following medication".
Rhodiola is commonly recommended by nutritional therapists for stress management.
